Being active in our community and working with several large community programs has been very rewarding on many levels. One of the greatest personal rewards is the opportunity to meet and build friendships with people I probably would not have known otherwise.
Robert Hodges is one such person. I met Robert several years ago at the Grand Bay Community Center just before he retired from the shipyards in Pascagoula. He stopped in to use one of the computers, available to use anytime the center is open to the public. Robert was curious about our program and as he was about to retire was looking forward to see where he could help out.
One of 4 boys, he was born in Birmingham Alabama. He served in the US Navy as a ship fitter and ship builder and a member of the SeaBees. In 1968 when he got out of the service he relocated to the gulf coast to work in the Shipbuilding industry. He worked at Ingalls in Pascagoula. Robert now lives in Grand Bay.
Robert volunteered to assist us with our Senior Bus and did such a wonderful job caring for those seniors that needed transportation assistance that when we started the home delivery – “meals on wheels” program we actually hired him to do both jobs.
For those of you that don’t know Robert personally, he can be found most days driving the bus or zipping around in our little red meal delivery car. Driving along with him on the route is a real privilege and seeing the way he treats his senior clients is amazing. The look on their faces as he drives up paints a vivid picture of respect and admiration. The last time I drove the route I was told by one of his clients that Robert coming with their lunch is the best part of their day. Watching Robert work, I believe it is the best part of his day too. Out of all the programs our Citizens group administers the homebound meal program is certainly one of the most important and cost effective. It touches people’s lives in a positive way and so does Robert. Family and loved ones can rest assured that their Seniors will be checked upon 5 days a week by a caring person with a smile and a kind word.
We would have a difficult time providing these services without Robert. Should you see Robert running around town serving our seniors make sure you give him a smile and a wave. He is truly what I love about living in our community, good folks who go out of their way to be good to others.
